ARTIST STATEMENT
My work examines the way individual perception informs memory by documenting my experiences traveling throughout the American West. My paintings analyze color and shape relationships in the landscapes. Organic shapes are arranged as series into individual contained abstractions. The paint is applied to the interiors with automatic textural brushstrokes. Precise lines and contours delineate the shape language into a hierarchy of value and light. The receding spaces coalesce to create a sense of depth and a feeling of magnitude. A muted palette evokes a washed out aesthetic meant to invoke a sense of nostalgia. My intention is to use these processes of deconstruction and reassembly in order to convey the ethereal feeling of observing sublime nature.
